What Your Groom Should Wear on Your Wedding Day

When wedding fashion is brought up most people immediately think of the bride’s dress, however, there are also a ton of options to choose from when it comes to groom fashion! The groom’s attire will be just as heavily featured in photographs as the bride’s, so it’s important that grooms love their look as well. We’re here to break down all of the decisions that need to be made when it comes to what the groom should wear.

Suit Vs. Tux

The first major choice grooms will need to make for their attire is suit or tuxedo? If you’re not set on either one, typically it’s safe to go off of your partner’s attire. If your fiancé is going all out with a formal tux or gown, then you should probably follow their lead. Same goes for if they’re taking a more relaxed route with their attire. It’s up to the couple to set the formality and dress code for the wedding.

Suits are typically more casual and can be worn again after the wedding. When it comes to personalized options, there tend to be more styles available with suits. Traditional suit colors include black, grey, and navy. If you’re looking to mix it up, we love a modern burgundy or dark green suit! Fashion-forward grooms should opt for trendy details like velvet lapels. When considering suits or tuxedos, suits tend to be the more affordable option. If you’re looking to stand out with a trendy look, or if you definitely want something you can wear again, then a suit is a great choice for you.

Tuxedos are a more formal and timeless option. If your wedding has a “formal” or “black-tie” dress code, this is the attire you’ll want to go with. Tuxes are typically worn with bow ties; however, you can also opt to wear a skinny tie for a more modern look. When it comes to pricing, tuxedos are typically the more expensive option. Overall, if you want a classic look that’s more formal, then the tuxedo is for you.

New call-to-action

Renting Vs. Buying

When it comes to whether you and your groomsmen should rent or buy your attire, there are a few things you’ll want to consider.

Renting is a much cheaper option than buying. Since you’ll be returning the clothes, the price tag is much lower. Many suit and tux rental stores offer discounts when your wedding party uses their service as a group. Tuxes can be pricey, so if you’re requiring your groomsmen to wear them, you’ll definitely want to go the rental route. Having your groomsmen rent their attire from the same place also guarantees that they’ll be perfectly matching! Although single color suits/tuxes usually look similar, renting from one company will ensure that they’re all identical.

Buying your tux or suit comes with its own benefits! The most obvious perk of purchasing your attire is that you get to keep it and wear it again in the future. Additionally, you’ll be able to have the suit or tuxedo custom tailored to give you a perfect fit. Buying is of course the more expensive choice, so you’ll want to give your groomsmen plenty of options in different price ranges if you’re expecting them to purchase their attire.

Coordinating

When choosing your attire, you’ll need to decide whether you’re coordinating with the bride and/or your groomsmen. You’ll want to make sure that you and your fiancé are on the same page with formality when it comes to your outfits. Try using the same flowers your bride has in her bouquet in your boutonniere as a way to coordinate your looks. You can also coordinate your pocket square or tie color to match any accent colors she may be wearing.

Typically, most grooms opt for a cohesive look and try to match their groomsmen either in entirety, or just with a few details. You may opt to coordinate certain aspects of your look with your groomsmen rather than matching them exactly. Use their accent colors in your attire to create a cohesive look. If you are wearing the same thing as your groomsmen but still want to stand out as the groom, consider changing one aspect of your outfit. If all of your groomsmen are wearing ties, think about wearing a bowtie to stand out. Alternatively, you could feature a different boutonniere or shoe color.

Accessories

There are a plethora of accessories that you’ll be able to choose from on your wedding day! Dress shirts, vests, cummerbunds, suspenders, belts, pocket squares, cufflinks, ties, and socks can all be used to personalize your look! If you’re looking to elevate your attire, cummerbunds are traditionally worn with tuxes, while vests can be used to dress up a suit. Suspenders, pocket squares, ties, and socks all offer the opportunity to add a pop of your wedding color in your look.

At the end of the day, make sure that you’re confident and your attire represents your style. No matter what you wear, your fiancé is going to be just as excited to marry you, so wear what makes you feel good!
